Abstract

Acetone, butanol and a small proportion of ethanol are produced by the fermentation of inert sugar with bacillus tetryl which is found in the nodes of the kassoer sugar cane and has the characteristic of fermenting invert sugar but not sucrose. The morphological and other characteristics of the bacillus are described in the Specification. Inverted molasses is a suitable material for treatment and this is fermented at a concentration of 45 to 60 grams per litre at a temperature of 30--39 DEG C. and pH of about 6. A small quantity, e.g. 1--5 grams per litre, of activating material such as kieselguhr or carbon may be used in the fermentation.ALSO:Butanol, acetone, and a small proportion of ethanol are produced by the fermentation of invert sugar with bacillus tetryl which is found in the nodes of the Kassoer sugar cane and has the characteristic of fermenting invert sugar but not sucrose. The morphological and other characteristics of the bacillus are described in the Specification. Inverted molasses is a suitable material for treatment and this is fermented at a concentration of 45 to 60 grams per litre at a temperature of 30-39 DEG C., and a pH of about 6. A small quantity, e.g. 1-5 grams per litre, of activating material such as Kieselguhr or carbon may be used in the fermentation. A culture suitable for the process and acclimated to the strength of sugar solution employed is obtained by establishing colonies on malt gelatine agar on inverted plates and propagating from the colonies in mashes of successively increasing density.
