[Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] In an intercalated scanning system, the area is scanned simultaneously in a plurality of groups of lines, each of which is transmitted over an independent channel. The simultaneously operative scanning-points are spaced by the width of one or more lines, and, after the scanning of one line, the scanning-points are moved so that, between the lowermost of those lines and the uppermost of the following lines, there is a space equal to that between the individual lines. After traversing the area from top to bottom, the scanning-points are returned, one or more times, to begin lines staggered with respect to the previous ones, until the spaces between the lines are completely filled in. The scanning-points, situated one below another, are electronic images of a diaphragm 9 with four apertures 9a ... 9d. The electron stream of each aperture comes from a separate emissive cathode 5a ... 5d, passes through a condensing cylinder 8a ... 8d, and is modulated by a grid 6.
