Abstract
448,908. Blowpipe burners. LINDE AIR PRODUCTS CO., 30, East 42nd Street, New York, U.S.A. Sept. 13, 1934, No. 26322. Convention date, Sept. 13, 1933. [Classes 75 (i) and 75 (iii)] In a blowpipe burner for welding, cutting, deseaming, and similar metal-working operations, the oxygen or other combustion-supporting gas is mixed with air before being mixed with the fuel gas and the flow of oxygen and the fuel gas is controlled by valves operated by a single means. In the burner shown, a single lever 96 operates the stems 95 of two diaphragm valves 48, 76 controlling the flow of oxygen and acetylene respectively from hose nipples 15, 69 to the heating gas passages 90 in the blowpipe nozzle 38. The oxygen on leaving the valve 48 enters an injector nozzle 54 in a bore 52 in the valve body B and passes with air aspirated through a shielded bore 56 through a throat 59 to a tube 60 which extends to a bore 61 in the blowpipe head He. The oxygen and air mixture then returns through a tube 62 to the valve body B where it passes through a mixer nozzle 67 in a bore 64 which is connected to the valve 76 through an exchangeable metering plug 77. The acetylene gas and air mixture is then conveyed to the nozzle 38 through a throat 82, an expansion chamber 81, and a tube 80. The length and volume of the tubes 60, 62 are such as to ensure that flashbacks will be extinguished before reaching the air inlet 56. The operating arm 96<a> of the lever 96 is cut away so as to open the oxygen valve,48 sooner and permit its closure by the spring 94 later than the acetylene valve 76. Oxygen is supplied to the cutting gas passage 41 in the nozzle 38 on a lever 27 being pressed to operate a plunger 31 to raise a spring-pressed valve V from its seating 18, thereby allowing the oxygen to pass through a tube 34 to a bore 35 and cavity 39 in the head He. The bore 35 is fitted with a constricting plug 37 limiting the volume of oxygen delivered. The oxygen and acetylene inlets to the valve body are fitted with screw-down stop valves 44, 72. The acetylene valve 72 is opened fully at starting and the oxygen valve 44 is then adjusted till a flame of the character desired is obtained.. A pilot burner P for igniting the heating gas mixture is connected by a tube 102 to a passage 101 in the valve body B, the passage 101 being connected to a passage 74 conveying acetylene to the valve 76. A bracket 103 clamped to the tube 80 carries the burner P which is fitted with a double screen 108 to prevent clogging of the fuel nozzle 109. A metering orifice 112 determines the size of the flame which is protected by a shield 113. The lever 96 and the operating button 28 of the lever 27 are arranged on opposite sides of blowpipe so as to be operable by the fingers and thumb of the operator's hand gripping the blowpipe handle H. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the subject-matter of Specification 449,003. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
