Abstract

443,197. Specific-gravity estimating- apparatus. TEATINI, D., Hougaerde, Belgium. May 16, 1934, No. 14812. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 19, 1934]. [Class 97 (iii)] A partial vacuum causes columns of liquid to rise in two transparent tubes immersed in cups containng the liquid to be tested and standard liquid respectively and the specific gravity is determined by measuring the heights of the columns by means of magnifying glasses and vernier cursors sliding along a graduated scale. In the form shown, the two tubes 6, 7 are connected at their tops through a flexible U-tube to a mercury container, connected by cords to a counterweight and adapted to be moved up or down to create a suction. Each of the cups 4, 5 has a lateral branch pipe 4b, 5b of the same diameter as the tubes 6, 7. By means of micrometer screws 22, 23, the levels of liquid in the pipes 4b, 5b, and the zero of a graduated scale may be brought into coincidence. A magnifying lens 24 is provided. For reading the heights of the columns of liquid in the tubes 6, 7, two cursors 18, 19, with vernier and magnifying glass are adapted to be slid along the scale 17 by micrometer screws 20, 21. If desired the column of standard liquid may be brought to the same height at each measurement and the images of the two liquid surfaces brought to the same eyepiece by a system of reflecting prisms.
