[Class 40 (iv)] [See also Group XL] A half-silvered surface 9 produces two light beams, which are reflected by mirrors 11, 12 over equal symmetrical paths to reunite at the same half-silvered surface, and movement of the diaphragm 13, carrying the half-silvered surface or one of the mirrors, controls the intensity of the reunited beam by interference effects. The mirrors are parallel and at the same distance from the half-silvered layer, and the mirror 12 on the thin diaphragm 13 consists of a small metallic surface deposited by vaporization. The diaphragm is in a chamber which is closed by a protective diaphragm 6 and the carrier 10 of the half-silvered layer and is filled with air or an inert gas. The two parts of the chamber communicate by fine bores 16. One or more further, separate chambers may be brought into communication with, or shut off from, the closed chamber to vary the controlling force of the diaphragm.
