Abstract

437,003. Valves. BULLOCK, F. E., Cotherstone, Warwick Avenue, Coventry. Feb. 5, 1935, Nos. 3667 and 7488. [Class 7 (vi)] [See also Group XXIX] For facilitating the conduction of heat away from the heads of poppet valves, copper or other metal of higher heat conductivity than the metal of the valve is either introduced in a loosely divided state interiorly of the valve stem, or is applied exteriorly of the stem in the form of a coiled wire sleeve, a number of rings, a solid sleeve, or a coating formed by spraying or electro-deposition. Fig. 1 shows a poppet valve with hollow stem and head, into which are introduced loose discs 5 of copper &c., the head being afterwards closed by a plate 12 secured by bending down a flange 11 on the valve head. Instead of discs, balls or shot, metal turnings, stranded wire, or split rings may be used. Fig. 6 shows the copper &c. applied exteriorly in the form of wire 14 wound in grooves around the stem and afterwards machined flush or enclosed by a metal sleeve, which may be of cast iron. In another form, a closely-coiled sleeve of copper wire or strip is enclosed by a metal sleeve.
