Abstract

435,202. Fencing ; wire fabrics; barbed wire. WOLLASTON, H. J. BUCHANAN-, The Pantiles, Pakefield, Lowestoft. March 24, 1934, Nos. 9241, 11135, and 27329. [Class 45] A wire fence made of single lengths of wire linked together, each extending from top to bottom of the fence, is formed with rectang u 1 a r meshes with their sides vertical and horizontal, the horizontal sides of adjacent meshes being in line and the wire of such thickness and hardness that the fence will support great horizontal strain without deformation of the linked wires which are formed with interengaging bights bent or offset so that the general surface of the fence is flat. The wire may be of spring steel, " stainless " steel, phosphor bronze, or nickel silver. The upper ends of the wires may project at any angle or be bent into decorative form, and the lower ends may be bent and embedded in the ground or in concrete. Some of the wires may be thicker than others to form supports between the fence posts. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2, the wires are bent at a ... e to form narrow bights which are slightly offset, the bends a ... e being shown on an enlarged scale for clearness, and a suitable mesh being 12 by 2¢ inches, or in a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), 9 to 18 inches by 2¢ inches with three meshes in each vertical row. As shown in Fig. 3A the lower bights are offset oppositely to the upper bights and linked together from the opposite side so as to hinge on one another in the opposite sense and form a more rigid fence in use, and this fence may be transported in rolls with the lower bights unlinked. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), only one side of the bights c and c<1> is engaged by the adjacent wire, this form being suitable for very thick wire. As shown in Fig. 5, an unclimbable topping for walls or fences is made of looped units a, b linked together with the ends bent at rightangles. In another modification wires bent as in Fig. 6 are looped together as shown in Fig. 7. The first Provisional Specification describes a form of the wire element in which the ends are not in the same vertical line as the middle portion and the corners at the outer end of the bight are formed by bending the wire out and back in the plane of the fence in a direction at 45 degrees to the vertical.
