Drawings to Specification. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] For colour-television or the like, a cathoderay tube comprises a screen provided with a plurality of series of streaks, each series consisting of two or more adjacent and parallel streaks of materials fluorescing in different colours, and the electron beam is deflected to move longitudinally of the streaks to produce traversal of a scanning strip and to move laterally of the streaks to excite a particular colour. The width of each streak is one-third that of the scanning strip and is equal to the width of the fluorescent spot. A photo-electric cell giving progressively greater electrical response from the blue to the red end of the spectrum may be used at the transmitter. Further, the fluorescent spot may traverse portions of two streaks to give a mixed colour. In another form, the width of the fluorescent spot may be the same as that of the scanning strip and the electron beam is varied in intensity across its width by means of a divided control electrode to produce the requisite colours. In a further form, the spot is adapted to move at right angles to the streaks to form the scanning strip, and hovers over those streaks which are to be excited and passes more rapidly over the others. The intensity control of the beam may be effected in the neighbourhood of the cathode and the coloursensitive control may be effected by the normal deflecting plates. The screen may be provided with fluorescent streaks arranged adjacent streaks which do not fluoresce as stated in Specification 425,267. In another form, the screen is adapted to produce white light and is associated with colour filters arranged in striplike formation perpendicular or parallel to the scanning strips.
