Abstract
433,315. Golf club shafts. SMITH, W., 17, Hertford Avenue, East Sheen, London. Feb. 16, 1934, No. 5171. [Class 132 (ii)] A tubular steel shaft for golf clubs is provided with two weighty collars or enlarged annular portions integral with or secured upon the exterior of the shaft for diminishing whip and insulating vibrations. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, collars b and c of truncated conical form are secured to the upper and lower portions of the handle portion of the tapered tubular carbon steel shaft a by grub-screws d, welding or brazing. A wrapping e of rubber or leather is provided and the handle of the shaft may be closed by a hickory cap or plug g. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the collars band c are integral with the shaft a the bore of which is constant. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the attached collars band c are approximately cylindrical with their ends nearer to the striking head suitably rounded off. The shaft a may taper for only part of its length adjacent the striking head. An additional collar c<1>, Fig. 1, may be adjustably secured to the shaft a by a grub-screw d. According to the Provisional Specification the edges of one or both of the truncated conical shape collars are preferably bevelled or rounded off.
