Abstract
Transparent sheets, strips, lamellae, &c. for packing, wrappers, &c. are made from the tubercles of plants of the Amorphophallus family, by subjecting such material to oxidation to render it soluble. The tubercles are sliced, dried, and ground, and oxidized using oxygen, ozone, hydrogen dioxide, peroxides, per-salts, hypochlorites, &c. In an example, powder from the tubercles is exhausted, purified in weak alcoholic solution, centrifuged, and dried. Persulphate of ammonia in distilled water is stirred therewith, the mixture heated, and a viscous syrupy product, obtained after filtration, centrifuging, and concentration in vacuum, is poured on to a plane support and dried as a uniform layer which may then be varnished.
