427,767. Hand driving-mechanism for cycles &c. BROWN, E., 93, Ormerod Road, and STOTT, F., 27, Elm Street, both in Burnley. Oct. 4, 1934, No. 24834. [Class 136 (ii)] Auxiliary driving-mechanism for cycles &c. comprises a reciprocating handle-bar which is so mounted and arranged that the upward pull that is normally exerted on it when the rider is pedalling (more particularly in ascending an incline) is utilized for actuating additional driving-mechanism to increase the driving power exerted by the rider. In the construction shown, a secondary handle-bar A is provided with two stems C adapted to slide in tubular guides B, which are detachably or otherwise secured to the usual handle-bar and may contain springs to effect the downward movement of the handle-bar A after it has been pulled upwards by the rider. The upward movements are transmitted to the front wheel through a cable or rod D, a chain E, and a free-wheel sprocket G. The cable or rod D is adjustably secured to the stem C, and rubber buffers H may be fixed on the stems C to absorb shock at the end of the stroke. In modifications, the cable or rod D is connected to an oscillating lever having a pawl-and-ratchet drive to the front wheel, either direct or through an endless chain.
