[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iii)] [See also Groups VIII and XIII] A perforated suction press-roll &c., for paper-making machines comprises a shell 110, Fig. 6, with a covering 111 of rubber the outer part 111<a> being softer than that 111<b> next to the shell. The rubber is secured in annular grooves or threads, and longitudinal dovetail slots having rounded inner corners. The shell, which is seamless and of bronze or gunmetal, is drilled to have helically disposed holes in a gang drilling machine the end hole 122, Fig. 7 of a row being broached triangular or square for identification. The shell is removed from the drilling machine, finished to size and shape, the rubber applied and cured, and the shell replaced in the drilling machine. The identification hole is then extended from the inside through the rubber and used for locating the shell in the same position with respect to the indexing mechanism as it originally had. Holes of smaller diameter than those in the metal shell are then drilled in the rubber leaving small sleeves and slugs as shown in Fig. 11, which are pushed out by rods placed in the drill chucks and fed in without rotating. In action, Fig. 6, the press pressure is sufficient to close the holes at the nip, thus preventing the felt being distorted thereinto. Specification 422,829 is referred to.
