Abstract
<PICT:0422925/III/1> <PICT:0422925/III/2> In a method of applying variegated or "jazz" colourings to the surfaces of articles by dipping the articles into a film of colouring materials floating upon a continuously flowing liquid, the liquid flow is produced as a surface flow across a relatively still body of liquid and the articles are passed through the flowing liquid surface into the relatively still body of liquid. A tank 10, 11, 12 is supplied with a surface stream of water by the perforated pipe 14, and colours may be shaken from bottles 24 by rocking the treadle 26. An air current from the blower 35 may be directed on to the liquid surface to assist the liquid flow and to agitate and mix the colours. An article B, to be coloured, is passed through the flowing surface into the still liquid at the deep end 11 of the tank, and may be removed therefrom by passing it under the baffle 13 into the portion 12 of the tank. This may be done by hand, or by the rotating wheel shown in Fig. 5, and in this latter case the coated articles may be released from their holders 39 by the action of a cam 42.
