Abstract

420,927. Cooling worm gearing. ROSE, A. G., and NORTHERN MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., Albion Works, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. July 31, 1933, No. 21423. [Class 80 (i)] [See also Group XXXIV] Relates to reducing gears of the kind comprising a worm 14 secured on a driving-shaft 10 and meshing with a worm-wheel 15 secured above the worm on a driven shaft 16, and a gear case 13 which supports the two shafts and totally encloses the worm and wormwheel, the gearing being lubricated by oil contained in a sump 18 in the lower part of the gear case. According to the invention, the lower part of the gear case is provided with walls 21 forming a tunnel or tunnels 19 extending parallel to the driving shaft 10, and a fan 24 is arranged to direct a flow of air along the tunnel or tunnels. As shown, the lower tunnel 19 is covered by the lubricating oil, and additional tunnels (not shown) are formed above the oil level. The wall 21 of the tunnels is formed with fins 22. A compressor may be used to supply air instead of the fan 24.
