416,238. Gas meters. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP MACHINERIEENEN APPARATEN FABRIEKEN, 30, Croeselaan, Utrecht, Holland. Jan. 11, 1934, No. 1131. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1933. [Class 54.] The volume of compressed gas passing from a supply pipe 1 to a delivery pipe 3 is measured by first charging a measuring chamber 12 past a valve 11 to a pressure regulated by a valve 4 operated by a pressure diaphragm 7 of a predetermined amount above the delivery pressure and then opening a valve 13 to allow the gas to escape to the pipe 3. The valves 11, 13 are opened in turn against the resistance of springs 18, 19 by a lever 21 operated through a tumbler-lever reversing mechanism 26 by a diaphragm 24 which is subjected on one side to the pressure in the chamber 12 and on the other side to the pressure in a chamber 10 through which the gas passes before entering the chamber 12. The gas inlet valve 9 of the chamber 10 is connected through a drag coupling 27 to the valve 11 and is operated therewith. The gas leaving the chamber 12 passes to the pipe 3 through a collecting chamber 14 which may be fitted with a regulator 15 to maintain the delivery pressure constant. A lever mechanism may be provided to maintain the valve 9 open at starting. In modifications, (1) a valve in the gas inlet chamber only allows gas to pass to one side of the diaphragm 24 when the measuring chamber is discharging; (2) the power for operating the valves is derived from clockwork mechanism controlled by the diaphragm ; (3) the diaphragm 24 may be replaced by a mercury manometer or by a piston or membrane arranged in the pipe 6 ; (4) a number of measuring chambers are used alternately.
