Abstract
410,058. Welting for footwear. HALLORAN, H. G., 160, Brush Hill Road, Milton, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Jan. 5, 1934, No. 469. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1933. [Class 17 (ii).] Welting for footwear or reinforcement therefor consists of a series of bias-cut fabric layers cemented together to form a composite strip. The reinforcement may be fed with mouldable plastic material, such as rubber, through an extrusion die having a shape corresponding to the crosssection of the welting to be made, vulcanizing being subsequently effected. As shown, tubular woven fabric 10 is fed between coacting rolls 11, 12 which coat the fabric with cement 13. The material is then guided on to a cylindrical form 15 on which it is cut into spiral strips 20 of sufficient width for a number of reinforcements by a knife 17 mounted on a rotating ring 18 equipped with gear teeth engaged by a driving pinion 18<a>. A number of strips 20 are superposed and united under pressure by the cement content thereof, and are then severed into strips 22 sufficient for two welts. A strip 22 is fed through a discharge passage 28 by the extrusion of plastic rubber in a container 23 by a spiral screw member 24 through the passage 28 which corresponds in size and shape, as shown in Fig. 6, to a double welt strip. Fudge-stitch rollers 30 make spaced indentations in the upper face of the welting if desired. The welting is provided with beads 29b and a valley 29<c> defining the line of severance between the two welts. A thread channel is also moulded in the welt. An alternative form of welting is shown in Fig. 10 wherein the bead 29b is omitted. The bias cutting of the fabric permits the welting to be bent more readily around the shoe.
