408,396. Calorimeters. SUTTON, T. C., Woolwich Arsenal, and GRIFFIN & TATLOCK, Ltd., Kemble Street, Kingsway, both in London. Dec. 16, 1932, No. 35700. [Class 97 (iii).] In a bomb calorimeter, a cap, slidable in the vessel and forming with the walls and a member, e.g. a threaded sleeve, secured in the open end of the vessel an annular space for a rubber or like ring, is moved outwardly and compresses the ring to form a gas tight joint when gas under pressure is admitted through a valve. In the form shown, the cap B slides in a slightly enlarged part of the tubular vessel A extending from the shoulder E upwards and presses the rubber sealing ring D against the threaded sleeve C. Gas for combustion is supplied through the inlet I, valve i<2>, conduit i<6>, and groove H from which it is directed into the vessel in a hollow cylindrical stream by the passage formed between a reduced portion G of the cap B and the walls of the vessel. O is an outlet tube which may be unscrewed to release the pressure in the vessel. The vessel is open at both ends the bottom being closed by cap B<1>, ring D<1>, and sleeve C <1>. The cap B<1> carries an insulated conducting rod L on which is mounted a support l<10> for the crucible M. The bomb is adapted to stand within an annular positioning ring T in a suitable water vessel so that electric current may be supplied from the insulated spring mounted table t<4> and rod L to the fusible element N and then through pillar P, cap B<1> and spring urged contactor R to the sleeve C<1> and leg J<1>.
