Abstract

Chlorine is introduced into solutions of rubber of low concentration (2 per cent or lower) and viscosity, and the resulting rubber chloride solution is gradually poured into hot water in which is immersed a disintegrating apparatus, whereby the solvent is evaporated, and the rubber chloride is reduced to a granular state. Prior to introduction into the water, the chlorinated solution may be reduced in viscosity by allowing it to stand, by the addition of alkali, or by exposing it to light, or by combinations of these. The separation of hydrochloric acid is facilitated by the addition of alkali to the precipitation water. Where solvents for rubber are employed having a boiling point higher than 100 DEG C., substances such as salts, alkalies, acids, mono- or polyhydric alcohols, esters, are added to the water to raise its boiling point. According to an example, 35 kg. of raw rubber are dissolved in 1700 kg. of ethylene bromide and left to stand to decrease the viscosity, chlorine is passed through, and the solution is allowed to stand for several days, or treated with caustic alkalies, or exposed to light for several hours. The solution is run in a thin stream into a vessel containing 8 parts of glycerine and 1 of water heated to 135-140 DEG C., in which an immersed propeller runs at high speed.
