Abstract

398,344. Feeding webs. WENZEL, E., 17, Wettinerstrasse, Aue, Erzgebirge, Germany. Sept. 9, 1932, No. 25195. [Class 100 (i).] In apparatus for drying webs of fabric looped over the transverse bars of a travelling chain, an automatic detector arranged in the vicinity of a loop or loops is responsive to changes in the length of the loop or loops and controls mechanism for regulating the relation between the rates of intake and delivery, so that the change in the length of the loop, due for example to a change in the amount of shrinkage during drying, causes a corresponding change in the speed of delivery. The feeler itself is preferably adjustable to suit a selected normal length of loop. In the form shown, an endless chain 7 in the drying chamber 4 is driven by sprocket wheels 6. A delivery roller 22 is driven from an electromotor 29 through means including gears 30, while the feed roller 19 is driven through shaft 17 from another electromotor. The bars 26 of the chain 7 are rotated by a chain 23 engaging with sprocket wheels 27, this chain 23 being driven through gearing from the shaft of the roller 19, so that the bars 26 are rotated at a rate depending on the rate of revolution of the roller 19. Near the last loop of fabric is a vertically adjustable bracket 31 having a bearing for a shaft 32 carrying a series of fingers 33. On the shaft 32 is also a contact arm 34 carrying an electric contact 35. The shaft is loaded and tends to rock the arm towards a stationary contact 37, but the weight of loops of normal length holds the arm in a central position. If the loops become longer, the shaft is thereby rotated to bring contact 35 towards another stationary contact 36, to close a circuit whereby the motor 29 is accelerated ; if the amount of shrinkage increases, the parts 35 and 37 contact, and the speed of the motor is reduced. Instead of the electric feeler a mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic feeler may be used.
