Abstract

397,603. Joint-making packing. ROBERTS, A. M., Holly Bank, Irlam Road, Flixton, Manchester, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. April 25, 1932, No. 11861. [Class 122 (iii).] In a high-pressure metallic joint for connecting tubes with loose or fixed flanges, or for use with tubes closed by plugs, caps, or plates, &c. the members making the joint engage by a sharp edge or V-shaped projection on one member which engages a groove in the other member. One member has an undercut groove which is of greater diameter than the joint groove and is supplied with fluid pressure. The exterior of the joint is open to atmosphere. In the construction, shown in Fig. 1, the tube 1 has a thickened end and is closed by a plug 2. An undercut flange 6 is formed on the plug 2 and has a V-shaped groove which receives a projection 5 on the tube. Fluid-pressure has access to .the groove 7. The exterior of the joint is open to atmosphere by a duct 8. In a modification the flange is formed upon the tube. In the construction, shown in Fig. 3, the V- grooves are formed in a metallic U-shaped packing 10 arranged between the plug 2 and tube 1. Packing-pieces 13, Fig. 6, may be placed in the packing 10 to prevent the flanges 14, 15 being closed beyond the elastic limit under great pressure. The pieces 13 may constitute segments of a ring which after insertion in the groove 7 are held in place by a circular spring wire clip. Alternatively the ends of the flanges may be upset, or a collar formed on the opposite face of the groove 7. Modifications are described in which a screwed cap or a plate secured by bolts, take the place of the plug.
