Abstract

392,416. Cables and conductors. ROST, H., 170, Calle Patzcuaro, Mexico City, Mexico. Sept. 28, 1932, No. 26930. [Class 36.] Electric conductors are insulated by a sheath of a synthetic plastic and elastic organic compound airspaced .from the conductor. Suitable compounds are polymerization products of substances containing the vinyl group, such as vinyl acetate, vinylbenzene, vinyl alcohol, acrylic acid or styrol and condensation products of these with aldehydes, cellulose esters such as cellulose acetate and cellulose benzoate, and cellulose ethers. Softening and plasticizing agents may be employed, preferably such as contain few or no hydroxyl groups. The insulating material is cut into strips which are formed by extrusion through a mouthpiece into tubes surrounding the conductor, the edges being caused to adhere by a solvent and pressure, or they can be wound on helically and jointed in the same way, or the sheaths may be formed by extrusion of a plastic material which afterwards sets. The sheaths may be formed with indentations to centre the conductor, as shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 4 shows a cable comprising three groups of four conductors. The conductors of each group are mounted on a hollow core 2 of synthetic material of the cross section shown and the whole group enclosed in a sheath 3 of similar material. The whole core is wrapped in aluminium foil 4 with an outer covering 5 of synthetic material. The individual groups may be covered with metal foil and the covering 5 replaced by an aluminium sheath formed of a metal tape parallel to the core and folded round it, the edges being welded electrically.
