Abstract
390,841. Valve components. PATTISON, E. W., 51, Deansgate Arcade, Manchester.-(Schõffer & Budenberg Ges. ; Buckau, Magdeburg, Germany.) July 9, 1931, No. 19725. [Class 135.] Casings.-In a stop, back-pressure, reducing, or other valve, the resistance to the stream of pressure fluid is reduced to a minimum by constructing the fluid passage so that its axis approximates to the shape of an elongated letter " S " or an ogee laid along the longitudinal axis of the valve so as to lie on both sides of the same. The casing 11 of the stop valve shown in Fig. 1 has aligned inlet and outlet openings 12, 13. The fluid stream is first diverted downwardly below the longitudinal axis by the wall 16 and thereafter led obliquely through the valve seat opening 14 by a guiding wall 17. On the outlet side, the fluid stream is diverted back to the longitudinal axis by a wall 18. The cross section of the fluid passage may be gradually reduced up to the opening 14 and thereafter increased to its original diameter at the outlet 13. The bevelling of the valve seat 23 and of the valve face 22 as well as the provision of an eccentrically arranged space 20 assist in promoting stream-line flow conditions. The valve cover 24 which is secured to the casing 11 by means of screw-threaded studs and nuts has integrally formed bridge-arms 26 carrying a supporting-nut 27 for the screwed spindle 28, the arms 26 allowing ample room for the removal of a gland cover 29a, which may be secured to the cover by hinged bolts. In order to pack the stuffing-box 29 when the valve is in use, the valve member 15 is provided with a seating 30 which co-operates with a seating 31 on the valve cover. To secure the valve member to the spindle 28, a semi-annular filling piece 36, Fig. 6, engages an undercut recess 34 in the valve member and an annular groove 33 in the spindle, whilst a larger filling piece 37 engages the groove 33 and a slot cut in the valve member, the parts being held together by a sleeve 38, the upper end of which may act in place of the seating 30. In some forms, the fluid stream is led perpendicularly through the opening 14. The latter may be arranged above the longitudinal axis, as in Fig. 1, or below it. In one modification, the bridge arms are dispensed with and the cover is screwed directly into the valve casing. In this form, the valve face comprises a plastic core in a metal covering arranged in a recess in the valve member. In other forms, the valve face comprises a ring of nickel or stainless steel surface pressed, shrunk, or welded on to the valve member. The seat-member 23 may be of manganese bronze or nickel bronze. One form of back-pressure valve is shown, the valve stem being guided in the valve cover. Specifications 5344/08 and 164,266, [both in Class 135, Valves &c.], are referred to.
