Abstract

387,380. Door fastenings. HYDE, W. J., 5, Inchmery Road, Catford, London. Aug. 4, 1931, No. 22142. [Class 44.] A door fastening by which a door may be secured in closed or slightly opened position comprises a member 1 secured to the door post 5 and adapted to pass through an aperture in the door and be engaged by a pivoted latch 9 engaging one or other of a number of notches 8 in member 1. The latch 9 is mounted on a spindle 12 operably by handles 13, 14. Locking from inside may be effected by a separate latch member (not shown) loose on spindle 12 and movable only from one side of the door, or, as shown, by a screwed or slidable pin 17 adapted to enter an aperture 16 in member 9 when this is in engaged position. The handle 14 may be shaped to form a screen for pin 17 to prevent manipulation from outside when the door is in slightly open position. Key-operated locking means (not shown) available from outside, or both sides, may be provided engaging either member 1 or member 9. The latch member may project into engagement with a keeper when the door is closed. Member 1 may be mounted to swing horizontally so that it can be folded against the wall when not in use, or may have universal movement as by two pivots at right-angles, or by a ball joint 2, as shown so that it may depend when not in use. The aperture in the door has a face-plate with flared entrance 7. The latch may be biased to engaging position by a spring or by the weight of the handles 13, 14. The latch casing 10 may have semicylindrical ends, as in Fig. 4, to facilitate formation of a suitable receiving recess in the door by brace and bit, and may be secured by screws 19 passed through the front-plate 18, or by a screwthreaded flanged sleeve passed through the aperture in the door and screwed to the casing.
