Abstract
384,843. Yarn-clearers. MARSH, J. H., Hazel-dene, St. Austell Road, Alexandra Park, Manchester. Feb. 15, 1932, No. 4377. [Class 120 (ii).] Apparatus for clearing yarns comprises a rotatable shaft 9 bearing a plurality of fixed circular clearer knives 6, a further plurality of clearer knives 7 each of which embraces the shaft and is coaxial with a clearer knife 6 to form a pair, means external of the shaft for maintaining the knives in yarn-clearing relation and means for effecting relative adjustment between the shaft and the external knife holding means. The shaft 9 carries a collar 11 and pinion 10 by which it is rotated through suitable gearing from the headstock of the machine, and the end of the shaft 9 passes into a bearing in the frame 5 and carries collars 12, 13 which embrace a ball race 14 and a compression spring 15 which maintains the collar 13 against the ball race 14 and the shaft 9 against a thrust ball 16 in a recess in a screw plug 17. The shaft 19 secured in the frame 5 by a screw 19a carries brackets 20 which take into peripheral grooves 23 in the knives 7, and either prevent or permit rotation of those knives. If desired the adjustable bearing may be arranged at the end of the shaft 19 instead of the shaft 9. In a modification, each knife 7 may be rotated from the shaft 9 by means of a driving collar 25 pinned on the shaft and housed in a recess 24 in the knife which is loosely mounted on the shaft. This collar is formed with a slot in its flange 26 which engages with a grub-screw 27 in the knife 7. A cover 28 screwed over the recess 24 forms the central plate of a ball race, the outer plate 29 and inner plate 30 maintaining the balls in position and being themselves held in position by screws 32 passing through the plates 29, 28 into the plate 30. Recesses 33 in the brackets 20 house springs 35 surrounding these screws and abutting against their heads 36 and the end of the recesses. In another modification the knives 7 may be rotated from the knives 6, for example, by metal pegs projecting from the knives 6 engaging in recesses in the contiguous faces of the knives 7, which are held in position either by the means shown in Fig. 2-the driving collar 25 and screw 27 being omitted-or by engagement of the bracket 20 in a groove in the knife 7 to permit rotation thereof. By making the shafts 9, 19 of the same cubic content and of metals with the same coefficients of expansion under heat, variation in the width of the slit x due to variations in temperature are avoided. Specification 189,302, [Class 120 (ii), Spinning, twisting, &c.], is referred to.
