Abstract
A composition for making blocks or tiles for lining rooms &c is prepared by the admixture of three groups of materials as follows: 50 per cent of group A which comprises (1) calcined magnesite and/or heavy oxide of magnesia, (2) one or more of the following: silicious rocks, sand, talc, pumicestone, infusorial earth, (3) potash alum, (4) mineral colouring matter. 25 per cent of group B which comprises (1) an aqueous solution of magnesium chloride, (2) aqueous hydrochloric acid, (3) an aqueous solution of sulphate of iron or zinc. 25 per cent of group C which comprises (1) one or more of the following: sawdust, cellulose, powdered wood, straw, paper, rags, or powdered cork, (2) one or more of the following: olein, glycerine, petroleum jelly or mineral oil, (3) one or more of the following: wax, ceresine, stearine, carnuba wax, or gum lac. The dry materials of group A are mixed while materials of group B are added in a fine stream. The materials of group C are mixed separately and added to the mixture of groups A and B. The composition may be faced with strips or squares of wood for parquet floors &c., or the strips of wood may be placed in a mould lined with paper and secured to the paper by an adhesive, and the composition poured in. Alternatively a grid-like mould may be employed, the pieces of wood being placed in the blank spaces, and the composition added as before.
