Abstract

382,731. Critical pressure boilers. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-, 28, Southampton Buildings, London.-(Siemens- Schuckertwerke Akt.-Ges. ; Siemensstadt, Berlin.) Oct. 14, 1931, No. 28575. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 26, 1931.] [Class 123 (ii).] Boilers formed of a tube system comprising radiantly heated sections 8, 10 in a combustion chamber 2 and other sections 7, 9, 11 in one or more subsequent furnace gas flues, a pump 12 forcing the working medium of at least the critical pressure through the system, are so dimensioned that the zone of conversion from liquid to vapour lies in the flue, e.g. about the portion 14 of tubing 9. A tubular enlargement 15 is provided beyond this zone in the direction of flow of the medium and preferably out of contact with the flue gases, and to effect a desludging of the boiler the flue gas temperature is caused to fall by varying the speed of an exhausting fan 4 and of a chain grate 1 until liquid appears in the enlargement from which it may be discharged through a pipe 20. In a modification in which, for example, three coils in parallel are arranged in the flues and combustion chamber, the zone of conversion is shifted by increasing the quantity of medium flowing into the coil to be desludged. A diffuser-like nozzle acting as a return flow throttle is located in each coil beyond the respective desludging pipe to prevent back flow so that during the desludging of a coil the tube system beyond this zone is supplied with the normal quantity of medium.
