382,309. Vehicle brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. -(Assignees of Grondahl, L. O. ; 7150, Penn Avenue, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) July 23, 1931, No. 21086. Convention date, Sept. 11, 1930. [Class 103 (i).] Eddy current braking apparatus for railway vehicles comprises in one form a transverse bar 2 of magnetizable material, connected to longitudinal bars extending beneath the track rails 1, 1a and provided with a winding 9 which when energized produces a magnetic flux through the bars, the rails, the wheels 6, and axle 7, the resulting eddy currents giving a braking action. In another construction the transverse bar extends between the webs of the rails 1, 1a and longitudinal bars lie alongside and on both sides of the webs. The bars 2 are preferably of higher permeability and lower specific resistance than ordinary track rails. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the transverse bar 2 may be integral with one track rail and the other track rail is bolted to it, the additional longitudinal bars being dispensed with in this case. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
