Abstract
372,777. Sunshine recorders. DUFTON, A. F.. Greenbank, Garston, Hertfordshire. Feb. 11, 1931, No. 4255. [Class 97(iii).] A sunshine recorder comprises two differentially arranged heat responsive elements of which the external surface of one is black and that of the other white. A slight actuation of the controlling element may cause artificial heat to be supplied to the second element and prevent further movement. In the form shown, a blackened bulb 2 containing ether and adapted to be exposed to sunlight is connected through a bent tube 1 containing mercury to an ether bulb 3 surrounded by a heating coil 4 and painted white. A pair of contacts 5, 6 are fused in the tube 1 below the bulb 2 and connected respectively to one side of an .alternating current source 7 through resistance 8 and to the other side through condenser 9, the contact 5 being placed at a short distance above the contact 6. Normally contacts 5, 6 are immersed in the mercury and current flows through resistance 8, contacts 5, 6 and condenser 9. On heat being supplied to bulb 2, the mercury level falls below contact 5 and the current passes through condenser 9, contact 6, mercury column, contact 12 and solenoid 11, the latter operating an armature and starting the clock 10. Immediately thereafter the mercury uncovers the contact 6, the current then passing through the heating coil 4 so that the bulb 3 is brought to a temperature approximately equal to that of the bulb 3, the mercury surface at the contact 6 oscillating slightly to maintain the balance. When the bulb 2 ceases to be heated the mercury surface has to move only the short distance between the contacts 5, 6 to short-circuit the solenoid 11 and stop the clock. The intensity of the incident radiation may be indicated by a meter adapted to measure and record the amount of heat supplied to the coils 4. In a modification operated by direct current the condenser 9 is dispensed with and the contacts 5, 6 are placed below the bulb 3. In a further modification two differentially arranged metallic strips coloured black and white respectively may be used.
