[Class 44.] A permutation lock, adapted particularly for use on cheque-books, portfolios, handbags, and the like, and applicable also to padlocks, comprises nested external and internal box-shaped elements 1, 6, the former being fitted with a series of transversely slidable buttons 3, the stems 3b of which carry pegs 4, and the latter being formed in its two sides with holes 6c corresponding in number and alignment with the buttons 3. A spring 8 is arranged at one end between the members 1, 6, and the latter carries at the opposite end a push button 7 by which it may be moved against the action of the spring to bring the holes 6c into register with the pegs 4. The latter are adjustable in the stems of the buttons 3 and can thus be set according to any desired combination. The locking action between the two parts A, B, which it is desired to secure together, is effected by the engagement of headed studs 10 mounted on a baseplate 9 in keyhole slots 6b formed in the base of the element 6, a detachable coverplate 11, having holes corresponding to the circular parts of the keyhole slots 6b being interposed between the base of the member 6 and the plate 9. In operation, when the buttons 3 corresponding to the predetermined combination are moved to disengage the pegs 4 from the holes 6c, the spring 8 forces the member 6 to the left, Fig. 1, and thus allows the studs 10 to be withdrawn from the keyhole slots 6b. Movement of any button 3, not forming part of the combination, not only fails to release the lock, but provides additional locking action by the engagement of its peg 4 in the corresponding hole 6c. Fig. 9 shows the application to a padlock, the element 1 carrying the buttons 3 (not shown) constituting, in this case, the lock casing. The internal element 6 is held between two slides 14 and the pushbutton 7 is extended to form the hasp.
