Abstract

368,286. Valve circuits. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., Marconi House, Strand, London, KEMP, C. G. and KEMP, L. G., 92, Upper Cedar Road, Southampton. Dec. 2, 1930, No. 36323. [Class 40 (v).] In order to adjust the local oscillator of a superheterodyne receiver to produce an intermediate frequency exactly equal to the middle frequency of the band for which the intermediate frequency amplifier is designed, without interruption of signal traffic, energy from the intermediate amplifier is fed to a branch circuit and combined with local oscillations of a frequency in fixed relation to the desired intermediate frequency, the combined oscillations being detected and the resultant beat (if any) indicated or observed. The Figure shows the push-pull second detector V1, V2 of a superheterodyne receiver fed from the intermediate frequency amplifier through the secondary T1 of a coupling transformer. A branch circuit is led through blocking condensers K1, K2 to a push-pull frequency doubling detector V3, V4 such as described in Specification 347,272. The output circuit comprises either an acceptor circuit C1, L1 tuned to double the input frequency, or part of the inductance of a parallel resonant circuit, or an acceptor circuit whose inductance is part of the inductance of a parallel resonant circuit, all circuits being tuned to twice the input frequency of V3, V4. The output is transferred from Ll to the input L2, C2 of an anode detector V5 and is there combined with local oscillations from V6, transferred through aperiodic couplings L3, L4. The oscillator V6 is adjusted to a frequency twice the middle frequency of the intermediatefrequency band and any beats, detected by V5 and passed to the telephones, indicate incorrect adjustment of the heterodyne oscillator which is readjusted until beats disappear without interrupting signal traffic.
