[Class 3 (ii).] A name or number plate comprises a foundation plate 1 drilled with two parallel rows of uniformly spaced holes 2, 3, and a set of letters and numerals 6 adapted to be attached to the previously drilled plate 1 in any desired order, the characters being provided for this purpose with centrally disposed upper and lower attachment means 4, 5 located either on part of the character itself or, where necessary, on extension members 8 of the same colour as the background, which is preferably black. The characters may be of cast aluminium, the parts 8 being of reduced thickness and the attachment means 4, 5 comprising integrally formed studs passed through the holes 2, 3 and secured in the manner of rivets. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 9, the characters may be stamped in channel section from thin sheet metal, the members 8 lying flat on the surface of the foundation plate, and tags 11 being provided which are pierced at 10 for attachment by ordinary rivets; in a modification of this construction, the tags 11 are passed through slots which replace the holes in the baseplate and are bent over behind the plate. In the letters L, F, P, when the member 8 is normally attached to the letter at one end only, its free end may be attached to another part of the letter by a strengthening strip. In the case of number plates for motor cycles, two of the completed plates may be mounted back to back.
