Abstract
In order that bleached or unbleached natural silk alone or with wool or hair, or both may be made into felt for use in making silk hats, dresses, filters, &c., the silk or mixture is treated to render the proteic substances in the silk insoluble, the treated material then being washed, dried, and felted in the usual way. The proteic substances may be rendered insoluble by exposing the material to the action of ultra-violet rays, or by treatment with mercuric chloride in the presence of hydrochloric acid, or with mercuric nitrate. In some cases, the material is given a preliminary treatment with water at about 80 DEG C. to expel the air. The following substances may also be employed: tannic or benzoic acid, phospho-tungstic acid with or without phenol, molybdic acid salts, formaldehyde, a naphthalene sulphonic acid, an oxynaphthalene sulphonic acid, phenol sulphonic formaldehyde, cresol sulphonic formaldehyde or an amino-naphthalene sulphonic acid.ALSO:In order that bleached or unbleached natural silk alone or with wool or hair, or both, may be made into felt for use in making silk hats, dresses, filters, &c., the silk or mixture is treated to render the proteic substances in the silk insoluble, the treated material then being washed, dried, and felted in the usual way.
