Abstract

359,459. Tents and tent-poles. PLANT BROS., Ltd. and PLANT, F. W., 7, Padding- ton Street, Marylebone, London. July 19, 1930, No. 21877. [Class 20 (i).] In a large self-supporting garden umbrella or sunshade 35, or the like, having a two-section pole 36, 37, tilting means are provided, adapted to be inserted between the two sections 36, 37 of the pole and comprising two members 11, 12 pivotally connected together by means capable of being locked to maintain them in an angular position relative to each other. The one member 12 is adapted to be engaged in the socket section.37 of the pole and the other 11 to receive the plug end portion which is ordinarily received in the section 37. The members 12, 11 are tubular, and flattened at 13, 14, and there carry circular plates 19, 20 adapted to interlock by tightening a wing nut 26 and bolt 22. Lugs 23, 24 on the plate 14 engage with the head 25 of the bolt to prevent it rotating. The plates are interlocked by the co-operation of radial ribs and grooves 21, or by forming one plate with a polygonal recess and the other with a corresponding projection, or by the engagement of tongues .on one plate with recesses in the other. Relative rotation of the members and pole sections may be prevented by the engagement of a spring-pressed projection 27 on the member 12 with an aperture in the pole section, and by the provision of an aperture 30 in the member 11 to receive a similar projection on the upper pole section. A number of such apertures may be provided so that the members 11, 12 may be fixed in any one of a number of positions relative to the pole sections. In a modification, the member 12 is formed in two parts, an inner part carrying the projection and an outer part carrying the apertures, the latter part being adapted to be received in the lower pole section.
