Abstract

358,296. Sanding bricks during moulding. BAILEY, H. H., Springfield, and BAILEY, J. E., Grundy Hill House, both in Heaton Mersey, Lancashire. Oct. 16, 1930, Nos. 30943, 31951, and 38495. [Class 87 (ii).] Apparatus, of the kind in which angularlydisplaced reciprocating brushes are used to apply sand to the top and ends of an extruded clay bar, is modified by making the top brushes act at a different time to the end brushes. The resilientlymounted end brushes d<2> are reciprocated by bellcrank levers j connected by links k to the eccentric m, the top brush D<2> being similarly mounted and connected directly to the eccentric, so that a downward movement of the strap l forces the top brush downward and withdraws the end brushes and vice versa. The term brushes comprises pressing and rubbing appliances and includes smooth - faced discs, perforated metal discs, or discs provided with detachable faces carrying punched-up protuberances, toothed or wire brush surfaces or combinations of these forms. Fig. 7 shows one construction in which a metal annulus with punched-up projections d<9> is secured detachably to a skeleton holder having radial holes in its rim to deliver surplus sand and trapped air. All the brushes are displaced angularly between reciprocations by fixed pawls i, I which engage serrated flanges on the brushes at the outer ends of their reciprocating movement. Adjustment is provided for at points h<2> and m<5>. Sand is supplied from a hopper p through flexible pipes to each brush, that delivered to the top surface being spread by a diagonally-mounted brush u before being pressed in by the brush D<2>. Sand not used falls into the hopper r, from which a hand-controlled door r<1> leads to the perforated screen s<1> in which a rotary brush forces the small particles through the screen and delivers the remainder to the outlet s<2>. A conveyer t<1> delivers the screened sand to a bucket elevator o<1> which redelivers it to the hopper p. The lower edge of the extruded bar is trimmed by a fixed knife v.
