Abstract

354,000. Wind direction and force indicators. LEUCHOVIUS, A. V., Lovekulle, Alingsas, Sweden. June 13, 1930, No. 18219. [Class 97 (iii).] A universally pivoted wind vane carries a sliding contact co-operating with a series of contacts on a bowl-shaped surface and closing electric circuits for indicating the positions of the vane. A series of contacts are provided for each quarter of the compass so that the inclination and turning of the vane caused by the force and direction of the wind respectively are indicated. In one form the shaft 200 of the substantially cylindrical vane 100 is supported by the ball and socket joint 20 and carries an adjustable weight 22 and the sliding contact 130. The latter coacts with a series of contacts I-IV for each direction of the wind on the spherical inside of a bowl 40 thus closing the circuits of the appropriate lamps A, B on a dial 170. The series A of lamps I<1>-IV<1> is adapted to indicate the force of the wind and the series B the direction. In the form shown diagrammatically in Fig. 4, each contact of the series I-IV is con. nected through a resistance 25 to the appropriate indicating lamp I<1>-IV<1> and each contact in a direction indicating series is connected through a resistance 25 to the appropriate direction indicating lamp of the series B. If for example the sliding contact 130 is touching the contact 27 corresponding to direction W and force II the lamp 181 corresponding to direction W and the lamp II<1> are illuminated, the current to other lamps having to pass through at least three of the resistances 25 and being insufficient to illuminate the lamps. When the device is used on a ship the bowl 40 is stabilized by a magnetic or gyroscopic compass. A switch 19 may.be provided whereby two or more vanes may be connected one at a time to the same dial 170. A single vane may be arranged to actuate several dials 170.
