Abstract

347,904. Straight tube heat exchangers. MICKELSEN, V., BRUNYATE, W. M. W., and REBBECK, F. E., c/o Harland & Wolff, Ltd., Queens Island, Belfast. May 17, 1930, No. 15191. [Class 64 (iii).] Rotary elements C are provided within the tubes A of a heat exchanger, and are rotated directly or indirectly by the liquid passing through and filling the tubes, and are either self-maintained against axial displacement or are held in position by restraining means. The rotary element may consist of a twisted strip, or a central spindle carrying a surrounding spiral and may be divided into a number of separate aligned portions which may twist alternately in opposite directions. The restraining means may be a ball joint D. If the tube is vertical and the liquid flows upward the weight of the member C holds it in position. The helix C may have a varying pitch. A propeller may be provided in the liquid inlet which drives the element C through spur gearing.
