Abstract
347,214. Actuation of switches. SMITH, F. A., Brasted Motor Works, Brasted, Kent. Jan. 20, 1930, No. 1993. [Class 38 (v).] Pneumatic actuation.-A switch adapted to remain closed while an internal - combustion engine is running, comprises a chamber 10 connected by a tube 19 with the induction pipe of the engine and a diaphragm 15 forming one boundary of the chamber 10 and communicating on its other side with a chamber 11 in communication with the atmosphere through a small hole 25. When the pressure in the chamber 10 falls due to the engine running the diaphragm 15 rises and a stud on it presses together two contact springs 20, 21 which move over each other with a sliding action. When the engine stops, the parts return slowly to their original position, the time depending on the rate of expulsion of air through the hole 25. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the chamber 11 has, in addition to a small hole, a one-way valve allowing a quick closing movement of the switch. The Provisional Specification describes modifications in which the diaphragm is replaced by a piston or bellows.
