Abstract

The cyclic ketone alcohols tetramethylolcyclopentanone, tetramethylolcyclohexanone, and octamethylolcyclohexandione, and the corresponding cyclic alcohols tetramethylolcyclopentanol, tetramethylolcyclohexanol, and octamethylolcyclohexandiol are nitrated with concentrated or mixed acids by the ordinary process, and the nitrated products are used in explosives. The cyclic ketone alcohols are obtained by condensation of the corresponding cyclic ketones with formaldehyde in the presence of alkali; by reduction they are converted into the cyclic alcohols.
