Abstract

339,764. Chance Bros. & Co., Ltd., and Forster, A. L. Nov. 20, 1929. Rolling.-Relates to the manufacture of glass sheets in which wire is embedded, either wine netting or ir:- dividual wires being used. The invention consists in the incorporation, with a glass sheet produced as a continuous strips, of discontinuous or separate webs or lengths of wire, preferably leaving narrow plain glass portions at the points where it is required to sever the glass. The wire is unwound from a roll a and is passed between the forming rolls b, by which a mass of glass c is formed into a continuous strip d. A pair of vertical guide channels f is arranged between the roll a and the rolls b, and the wire is fed into one or the other of these channels by feeding-rolls g, a pair of shears h being actuated from time to time to cut the wire into lengths. A movable guide i, associated with the shears h. diverts successive lengths of wire into separate channels f. Feeding rolls j may be arranged in each of the channels f, and a feeler bar or roller l swings in an opening in the channels f. The feeler is carried by a lever m, which is connected by a spring o to another lever n on the same pivot. In use, a length of wire mesh is fed into one of the channels f and is then fed to the glass by the feeding-rolls j, and during this operation the feeler l bears against one side of the wire. Meanwhile, wire is being fed into the other channel f and when the proper length has been delivered, the wire is cut off by the shears p and the movable guide i is then swung over to the first channel f. As soon as the first length of wire has passed the feeler l, the lever m. is drawn over by the spring o, starts the mechanism for feeding the second length of wire, and stops the rollers j which have fed the first length. The lever n is now moved from the position 5 to the position 6, and this brings the feeler l into contact with the second length of wire, and the cycle of operations is repeated. The wire may be fed in previously prepared lengths instead of being coiled on a roll.
