Abstract
339,683. Martin, J., and Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co., Ltd. Sept. 13, 1929. Buffers.-In a railway or like vehicle buffer of the kind in which a buffer-ram 5 slides within a guide or casing 1 secured to the front face of the headstock 2 and extends through the headstock to bear against buffing springs at the rear thereof, an emergency retaining device 13, which prevents removal of the ram in case the ordinary cotter 9 should be detached or broken, is secured to the part of the ram within the enlarged bore 10 of the guide 1 but in such a position that during the normal stroke of the ram it does not contact either with the shoulder 11 of the guide or with the headstock. As shown the emergency retaining device comprises a spring ring 13 located in an annular groove 12 in the ram, but a split or coiled ring or washer or a pin, key or similar projecting means may be employed.
