Coating and damping appliances, hand.-In a machine for painting floors comprising applying rolls and painting rolls, movable pads are arranged in the hollow applying-rolls containing varnish so that the outflow holes therein are alternately closed and opened, whereby the paint is applied to the floor in stripes which are spread by the painting rolls. A cylindrical hollow roll 1, having holes 2 arranged in diametrically opposed groups extending over the whole length of the roll is closed at the, ends by plates 3, 4 having trunnions 6, the reduced ends 5 of which are journaled in a frame 7. The holes 2 in roll 1 are closed from the inner side by spring-controlled curved pads consisting of a heavy plate 17 and a thin flexible plate 18, the intervening space being filled with felt 19. An angular plate 20, 21 is fixed to each pad, the arm 20 gripping with its two flanges 23 and sliding over a transverse bar 22 (Fig. 7). A shaft 26 extending through each journal 5, 6 carries on its outer end a plate 27<a> fixed to the frame 7 and on its inner end an arm 28, the end of which is bent outward and has a concave surface. When the roll is rotated, the concave ends 28 grip teeth 29 on the arms 20, which are moved radially on the transverse bar 22 so that the corresponding pad is moved away from the wall of the roll. In a modified form of the apparatus, Fig. 9, the curved pads are controlled by blade springs 34 guided in holes 35 of a horizontal bar 36 having control studs 37, 38 on the two ends, sliding in bearings 39 and 5, 6 respectively. The end of the stud 38 bears against one arm 42 of a lever 42, 43 mounted on a bracket 40, the other arm 43 extending through an aperture 44 of the side plate 7 and carrying on its end a roller 46 which runs on a circular track 47 fixed on the end plate 3. When the roll is rotated the lever 42, 43 is oscillated by the roller 46 surmounting the projections 48 on the track 47 (Fig. 11) and causes the bar 36 to shift to the right whereby the blade springs 34 bend' and the pads move away from the wall of the roll.
