328,364. Nordberg Manufacturing Co., Buettner, R. W., Erickson, H. E., and Talboys, H. H. Feb. 22, 1929. Plant for laying track.-A machine for working upon railroad tracks comprises a frame wheeled along one rail and supporting a working member and motor, the frame also carrying a wheel which can be moved to engage the opposite rail and adapted when in this position to hold the working-member out of action. The machine may be used to adze sleepers, drive or pull spikes, rotate bolts or perform drilling or milling operations. A longitudinal frame A<1> carries adjustable track wheel A<4> and an adjustable guide roller G<7> on the outer side or both sides of the track rail. The frame A<1> supports a transverse frame B carrying an internalcombustion motor C<4> and an adjustable workhead H. This head carries a spindle H<6> with pulley H<7> driven from the motor by belt C<6> passing over an adjustable guide pulley C". The spindle H<6> carries cutters H<9>. A frame D<1>, pivoted to the frame B at D<4>, carries an auxiliary track wheel and in the position shown acts to counterbalance the work-head H. For travelling the machine, the frame D<1> is turned over and an extension D<5> is bolted to a transverse member B<2> on the frame B so as to hold the head H out of action. The frame B carries guards L<3>, and handles L provided with a control M<1> for the motor. The frame B also has an adjustable abutment E which can be turned down to engage the track and prevent backward tilting of the frame. The spindle H<6> may carry bevel gearing to drive a milling cutter, or the cutter may be rotated by a chain from a shaft drive, or by a flexible shaft I<8>, Fig. 7.
