Branding by heat.-In electrically heated branding-apparatus for marking animals &c. comprising a wire or ribbon formed into numerals &c. on an insulated plate secured at the end of a non- conductive case carried bv a handle, a switching- device is provided comprising a spring-controlled plunger whereby the application of pressure in using the apparatus completes a circuit by which current is supplied to the branding-wire and the removal of pressure switches off the current. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a branding-plate 34 constructed as described below is provided with two sets of plugs 32 engaging sets of sockets 26, 27 on the ends of pins 23, 28 in electrical connection. with bus bars 22, 22A. The bar 22 terminates in a central contact 21, opposite to a contact 8 in a disc 7 fixed by a cap 13 to a handle 1, the contact 8 being connected to one wire 10 of a twin cable 3 passing through a bore 2 in the handle 1 to a current supply, and the bar 22A being connected to the other wire 30. The sockets 26, 27 are mounted in a disc 25, and the pins 23, 28 pass through a disc 20 to which are fixed guide pins 15, 15A passing through holes in the disc 7 and engaging holes in the handle 1. The discs 20, 25 are fixed together by a band 37 slidably mounted in a casing 39 and movable inwardly against the action of springs 16 on the pins 15, 15A to close the contacts 8, 21 when the device is pressed on the surface to be marked. The branding'-plate 34 may be made up of a number of independent removable sections, each having wires stretched across its face to form a character, the wires being connected to the plugs 32; alternatively, a single plate 34 may carry a number of characters, and, where necessary, a character is made up of continuous and discontinuous lines (Fig. 3, not shown), the latter being joined up by wires passing below and insulated from the former. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the separate wires of a twin cable 3 passing through one of the handles of a pair of pliers comprising jaws 51, 67 are connected to contact studs 55, 55A in an insulating disc 54 attached to the jaw 51 by means of a bolt 52. Slidably attached to the disc 54 by means of guide pins 56, and normally separated therefrom by springs on these pins, is a branding-plate 62 to which are fixed contact pins 63, 63A passing through a disc 60 fixed to a casing 58, so that the circuit is closed when the jaws are pressed together. The bolt 52 may form a contact as in the form shown in Fig. 1. The jaw 67 carries a printing-pad 72 whereby a mark is printed on one side of an ear while a brand is burned in the other side. Counting-apparatus.-The guide pin 15A, Fig. 1, has a pin-and-slot connection with the operating-arm 46 of a counter 49, and the arm 46 of a counter 49, Fig. 4, mounted on a bracket 73 on the jaw 51 is connected by a link 74 to the other jaw 67 whereby, in each device, the number of operations is registered.
