Abstract

324,228. Flint, C. F. V. Jan. 21, 1929. Hollow-ware.-Containers, e.g. transport pails, milk coolers, barrels, &c., or part thereof of aluminium &c. are formed with the bottom or neck parts integral with, but of harder consistency and preferably thicker than, the adjacent portions of the container wall. In manufacture a hard-rolled disc of aluminium &c. 1 is annealed annularly at 3 by gas flames 12 issuing from an annular burner 10, or alternatively by superheated steam or electricity, the central portion 2 being kept cool, for example by cooling water circulating through pipes 9 and hollow drums of high heat conductivitv 7, 8. The treated disc is then pressed to a cup-like form, Fig. 3, and the wall is thinned by spinning, the tool 16 being provided with a rib 17b for displacing the metal and the tool 18 preventing bulging and also smoothing the surface. The thinning may be stopped as desired to leave a thicker rim to the vessel to which the handle may be attached. Barrel-shaped containers, Fig. 6, and formed by two such elements being welded together along the edge 27. To form containers having also a harder and preferably thicker neck part 20, Fig. 8, the upper portion is pressed to the form shown in Fig. 9, the lower part thereof being removed by the cutting-tool 30. The neck and body parts are then welded together at 22 and covered by a strengthening ring 23 to which the grips are attached.
