Latches, preventing operation of; latches, sliding; striking plates and staples.-In a lock having a spring-shot bolt b which can be withdrawn by handles h operating a follower o acting on plates p at the tail of the bolt in the usual way, a lever r is provided, one end s of which is adapted to engage behind a shoulder u on the bolt to block the bolt in shot position, the lever being biassed by a spring t and controlled by a pivoted cam z which is operable from inside by a hand-lever y and from outside by a key 7 operating a rotating-barrel pin-tumbler lock 6, the bar 8 of which engages a slot 9 in a rotatable disc 1. A lost-motion connection is provided between disc 1 and the spindle of cam z by a pin 2 engaging an arcuate recess 5, Fig. 4, so that hand and key operations are independent. The bolt shown has two rods c surrounded by springs m between the inner end of the bolt head and a bearing plate k, and the lever r is of the cranked formation shown to allow the lever and cam z to be pivoted on a central line of the lock between the rods c. A pivoted horizontally movable lever 11 may be provided having a shoulder 12 adapted to engage a pin 13 on the bolt under the action of a spring 14 to retian the bolt in retracted position, the lever being tripped to allow the bolt to shoot by the end 16 of the lever engaging a projection 17 on the staple 18 when the door is closed. A modification of more substantial construction is described in which the stop lever and its controlling cam are mounted between the bolt structure and the front of the casing, the pins 2 and 13 are replaced by shoulders, springs t, 14 are replaced by coiled springs, and the box staple, Fig. 7, is cut away at 30 to allow passage of the lever end 16, the projection 17 being at the remote side of the staple or omitted.
