Abstract

Crops, root, digging and topping machines for. - In a machine for lifting and topping beet the leaves are raised bv arms and guided between screw shaped rollers 30. The roots are loosened by shares 20 and are advanced against the topping knife 35 bv rotation of the rollers, and the leaves are swept away by rotating arms 36. The roots are then raised from the ground by grippers on a pair of wheels 56 slidably mounted on a shaft 55 and pressed together by springs 58, are released from the grippers by a curved plate 61, and are thrown onto a conveyer 60. The rollers 30 are pressed together by springs (not shown) and are mounted on a pivoted frame 29, the vertical position of which is adjusted by a lever 53. The shares and grippers are raised out of the operative position by a lever 27. The rollers, grippers and conveyer are driven by the road wheel 8, from which they may be disconnected by a clutch on the countershaft 42.
