Abstract

319,886. Smith, A. C. Aug. 20, 1928. Forceps; ligatures and sutures; blood vessels, treating; suturing and wound-closing appliances. -Forceps for use in sealing arteries, &c. are provided with jaws which press the teeth of a serrated, channel-shaped, strip of metal on to the artery to seal it, a cutter which severs the sealing portion from the strip, and means for feeding forward the strip after each sealing operation. A strip of ribbon a of absorbable metal, such as magnesium, or an alloy of an absorbable metal with aluminium, zinc, mercury, bismuth, tin, or copper, is constructed of a channel shape, the upstanding edges a' having serrations a<11>, and, if desired, the base is provided with slots into. which the ends of the teeth a<1> may be forced in the sealing operation. The forceps for use with, the ribbon consist of two arms c, d pivoted at e, the arm c being provided with a. groove c<1> to. hold the. ribbon a. As the arms of the forceps are closed, a pawl f pivotally mounted on the arm d is pressed into engagement with the serrations a<11> by a spring f<1> and the ribbon is stepped forward. On opening the arms, the pawl f rides over the teeth to the next serration. The jaw of the arm c is flat, but the jaw d<1> has a centre rib and depending side flanges so that, as the jawsare pressed together, the teeth a<1> of the ribbon are forced inwards to seal the end of the artery lying in the trough of the ribbon. As the jaws close, the sealing portion of the ribbon is severed from the main portion by a detachable cutter g on the jaw d<1>; the tang g<1> of the cutter passing through an opening in the jaw d<1> and being retained in place by a set screw k. A guard plate h on the arm c and a blade spring (not shown), retain the ribbon in its proper position in the groove c<1>.
