Abstract

315,566. Wellman Smith Owen Engineering Corporation, Ltd., (Wellman Seaver Morgan Co.). July 11, 1928. Charging.-In apparatus for feeding fuel to gas producers of the kind comprising superposed hoppers 11, 12 closed by alternately operated counterweighted bells 20, 21, the latter are actuated by a cam with which is combined a second cam adapted to move a separate weight simultaneously with but in the opposite direction to the bell weights 35, 36, this arrangement assisting the driving mechanism to raise the weights and preventing over-running during their descent. The arms 22, 25 carrying the bells 20, 21 are secured to squared portions of shafts 26, 27 by hubs which are sector-shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, to prevent passage of fuel through the openings 31, 32. A shaft 59, which is intermittently rotated from a main driving-member 43, 44 through links 58, 55, 67, and pawl and ratchet mechanism 61, 66, has rigidly secured thereon a sleeve 68 which is formed with two cam surfaces 69, 70 of the form shown in Fig. 4. The former is adapted to engage alternately with followers 74, 85 mounted on arms 84 carrying eye-bolts 76 which engage over pins 78 on crank arms 79 formed integral with the counterweights 35, 36. The cam 70 co-operates with a follower 82 mounted on an arm 81 which is connected, in the same way as the arms 84, to a weight 80 loosely mounted on the shaft 26. The shaft 59 is operated by the inward stroke of the driving- member 43, 44, the outward stroke of the latter being utilized to actuate, through arm 53, 54, yoke 51, and link 48, pawl and ratchet gear 45, 47 which intermittently rotates a pooketted drum 39 to deliver fuel from the inlet 42 to the upper hopper 11. The link 48 is pivoted at its lower end to a nut 49 on a screw 50 which latter is mounted in the yoke 51 and carries a handwheel 52 by which the rotation imparted to the drum 39 may be adjusted. To prevent injury to the mechanism should the feeder or bells jam, the driving member 43, 44 and the arm 53, 54 are each formed in two parts connected by a shear pin 185, an adjustable stop 87, locked in position by a wing nut, being provided to take up any looseness due to a badly fitting shear pin. The bell valves 20, 21 co-operate with seatings 16, 17 formed on annular discs 14, 15 which are disposed between the, parts 11, 12, 13 and may be removed by separating these parts by means of set-screws 19, Fig. 1.
