Abstract

305,342. Shaw, J. C., and Shaw, R. D. Dec. 24, 1927. Milling; copying mechanism. -A tracer for following the. templet or pattern in a copying- machine, particularly the cam-cutting machine described in Specification 297,263, comprises a head having a knife edge engaging the pattern and rotatable about an axis passing through this edge. As applied to a tracer-spindle of the kind described in Specifications 233,747 and 275,479, the spindle 1 is universally movable in a casing 4 by means of a ball and socket bearing 2 and is provided at its free end with a tapered portion 10 on which the tracer head 9 is secured by a nuts 7 screwing on the spindle and the head. Ball bearings 13, 14 positioned within the head by sleeves 17, 18 and a cap 20, support the shank 15 of the tracer point which consists of a cylindrical portion 23 projecting from a circular flange 24 and cut away by two radial planes passing through the axis of the shank 15 and enclosing an angle of approximately 70‹. The knife edge 25 thus produced engages the pattern, and in the cam-cutting machine above referred to the pattern is laid out as a development of the central line of the cam sc that the axis of the tracer follows the path which the axis of the cam follower is required to traverse.
