Abstract

Speedometer transmission mechanism; odometers; rest or motion indicators and recorders.- Relates to apparatus for indicating or registering the cessation of rotation of the shafts operating speedometers, odometers or revolution counters on motor vehicles while the vehicle or engine is running. For this purpose a mass oscillatable by the vibration of the engine or running vehicle is normally held steady while the meter shaft is running but is freed, upon stoppage of the shaft, to show an indicator, or operates an odometer at an abnormal rate, or print from timedriven wheels. A lever 1, Fig. 1, carrying a weight 6 balanced by a spring 7 has a pawl 3 engaging a ratchet wheel 4 coaxial with a wheel 5 of the revolution counter, and has a pin 12 for engagement by a detent 10 while the latter is free from contact with a pin 9 attached to the speedometer pointer 8. When the pointer is at zero the detent 10 is withdrawn from the pin 12 and if the vehicle or engine is running the lever 1 actuates at an unusual and noticeable rate the revolution counter. In the form shown in Fig. 2. the pointer-operated detent 10 frees a weighted lever 1 which drives a ratchet wheel 4 having a pin 20 to rock a lever 21 and withdraw a spring- controlled stop arm 22 from a pin on a wheel 18 of a train 16, 17, 18 which through pin-wheel and spring-urged hammer prits a record from time wheels 15. The actuating spring of the train 16, 17, 18 is tensioned by the ratchet wheel 4. In a further modification a frame 34, Fig. 3, swings on the driving shaft 26 of a speedometer and carries gearing controlled by an escapement 33, so that by its inertia., while the shaft 26 is running, the frame 34 is swung against the action of a spring 35 from a stop 36 over to a stop 37 and thus into position to impede a finger 38<a> on the oscillatable weighted lever 38. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the meter-driving shaft 26 carries on a radially slotted disc 39 a sliding weight 41 flexibly connected through an axial bore in the shaft to a, longitudinally movable spring-controlled stop 46 for arresting the oscillatable lever 47. The latter when freed during the running of the vehicle or engine by the stoppage of the shaft 26 actuates a counter 50 at a greater rate than normally. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the oscillatable lever 47 carries a coloured weight 60 in position to be seen through an aperture 61 in its casing. The vibration-preventing stop 57 is carried on a drum 56 frictionally engaged internally by a spring-controlled lever 54 pivoted on an arm 53 on the meterdriving shaft 26.
